Carlen & Co. specializes in high end residential remodeling (kitchens, bathrooms, additions) and commercial work (ti's, offices, restaurants).
Carlen & Co. has built a number of local restaurants, done projects at the University of California, worked on professional offices and other commercial businesses as well as many beautiful and historic residential homes in Berkeley, Oakland, Piedmont and other communities in the East Bay.
We are committed to only taking on projects where the communal intention is to execute at the very highest level. Doing it once and doing it right!
Company Bio
Carlen & Co. has been in business since 1981 when Jamie Carlen first obtained his contractor’s license. Jamie operated as a successful general contractor for over thirty years in the east bay. In 2012, Jamie realized his run was coming to an end and entered into a partnership with long term employee Nick Silberman to facilitate the continuation of the company. Jamie and Nick co-ran the company for two years. In 2014 Nick Silberman and Robert Madison took over day to day operations.
Philosophy
Carlen & Co. is built around providing excellent customer service. Being kind, patient and positive. The high number of decisions involved in a remodel requires a responsive and attentive contractor who can understand the design intentions of the architect and make reasonable recommendations to the homeowner. We strive to meet those needs and fulfill the wishes of the client and project. The entire process from preliminary drawings to the first dinner in the new kitchen must be enjoyable for all parties involved to truly be considered a success. That is the standard we set for ourselves and our clients. We love knowing that our work transforms people’s spaces and lives.
As a mid sized company, we tend to run fewer jobs at any given time. This ensures no job is ever overlooked or left without sufficient direction or production. Communication and integrity play a large part in our operating philosophy (e-mails and phone calls are promptly returned). Carlen & Co. understands a client wants a well-executed project at a fair price.
Our Team
Nick silberman | Owner
After graduating with a degree in advertising, Nick realized he enjoyed problem solving, but not in an office environment. A desire to use his skills tangibly led him into carpentry. As an owner, he currently finds his passion through establishing great relationships with his clients and delivering an excellent remodeling experience. He enjoys raising two young children, while also relishing any small break he may get.
Rob Madison | Owner
Robert grew up in the construction industry. He has managed to gain an unbelievable amount of knowledge and experience up to this point in his career. His path has taken him through some of the most high end local builders as well as some of the most interesting and special projects in the area. Robert is also a father to two young children.
Jamie carlen | retired FOUNDER
Jamie is loving retirement more than he ever imagined! His biggest concern these days, is if the fish are biting at his part time home in Mexico. A well deserved chapter for a beloved local construction icon.
